food and fantastic souvenirs. After observing the history of the statue, take the ferry to Ellis Island. The
gemstone and focal point of Ellis Island is the 100,000-square-foot Ellis Island Immigration Museum, housed
in the main building. The museum is devoted to the history of Ellis Island and the story of immigration to
America. Don’t forget to check out the American Immigrant Wall of Honor, which has more than 500,000
names of individuals and families.

GEOGRAPHY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

Workshop/Course Description:  Students today need to be made more aware of the world. This workshop is
designed to explore how to integrate geography throughout the disciplines with ease.  We will travel
“beyond the worksheet” to discover meaningful, creative, interactive ways to teach children about the
world and its many features.  
Among topics to be covered:  
o        The science of Geography
o        The Five Themes of Geography
o        Using the Massachusetts History and Social Science Framework
o        Geography across the curriculum: Literature Connection
o        Maps as Primary Sources
o        Differentiated Instruction:  Creative lesson planning

Carol Cohen has many years experience working in the field of education.  She is an adjunct faculty member
at Lesley  University in the Graduate School of  Education.  She teaches Social Studies Methods and
Practicum Seminar.  With  her company Now Voyager Education, Carol travels to schools all over New
England presenting history and geography workshops to elementary and middle school students and
teachers.  She holds three Massachusetts teaching certifications and is an approved Massachusetts
Professional Development Provider. Carol is a published historian having authored the Oregon Trail
Jackdaw for Golden Owl Publishing.

Audience: Elementary and Middle School Teachers and Administrative  
      Curriculum Coordinators

Workshop/Course participants will:   
•        Develop a working knowledge of Massachusetts History and Social           
Science Framework as it relates to practical use in the elementary school
classroom across grade levels.
•        Investigate the five themes of geography and expanded geography skills.
•        Understand the essential role geography plays in educating our youth.
•        Examine popular geography theory specific to human –environment
interaction.
•        Explore and analyze current geographic education theory.
•        Recognize technology as an important tool in conducting geographic subject specific research.
•        Understand the vital role that Primary Sources play in geographic studies.
•        Begin building a comprehensive interdisciplinary, multi sensory curriculum unit specific to the five
themes of geography.
•        Have a working knowledge of geography terminology.









BIOGRAPHY : A WINDOW INTO HISTORY

Course Description: This workshop is designed to explore how the study of biography is both an entrance
into the study of history as well as a  an engaging way to investigate every subject across the curriculum.   
The study of people and their accomplishments, both large and small, is a wonderful way to capitalize on
our students’ natural curiosity.   Tracing subjects and the materials they have produced helps students to
grasp not only the subject of history, but math, science,  and  the arts as well. We will travel “ beyond the
worksheet” to discover creative ways to teach  students about
biography.  12-15 PDP'S
